Stat show how woeful Newcastle are in the FA Cup

Newcastle United were on the receiving end of a giant killing once again in the FA Cup today, as they exited the competition in an early round yet again- this time losing 3-0 to mid-table League One side Oxford United. The Magpies look to have improved under Rafael Benitez, and seem set to secure an immediate return to the Premier League, but they have still failed to overcome their woes in the FA Cup- and this statistic sums it all up.

Newcastle United have now gone seven whole years in the FA Cup without keeping a clean-sheet, with this seeing being the first time in a while that the Magpies even made it past the third-round stage. In the end though, it’s another forgettable cup run.

The Magpies have their sights set on bigger things this season but they’ll certainly need to improve, as they fight Brighton for the Championship title.

Three things we learned from Man United’s scoreless draw with PSV

With the carrot of ensuring qualification to the Round of 16 and the stick of enduring consecutive defeats to a PSV side deemed significantly inferior, many expected a thrilling performance from Manchester United this evening.

Louis van Gaal selected a relatively exciting team with plenty of pace through Anthony Martial, Jesse Lingard and Memphis Depay, but the Red Devils quite simply failed to deliver.

Indeed, this scoreless draw was nothing short of a snooze fest as United aimlessly pumped the ball around midfield without fashioning any stand-out chances, whilst PSV convincingly held shape to ensure what could be a vital point away from home.

But we at Football Fancast view every game, be they a nil-nil or a ten-goal thriller, as an opportunity to learn something about those involved. Tonight’s match is no different and with that in mind, here are the three things we learned from United’s scoreless draw with PSV Eindhoven.

Boring, boring United

It’s an accusation that has been thrown at Manchester United many times already this season, but rang truer than ever in tonight’s Champions League clash.

The Red Devils enjoyed over 60% possession but manufactured few out-and-out chances, rarely testing the space behind PSV’s three-man defence or committing them with attempted take-ons. In fact, United finished up with just 5 successful dribbles, whilst the away side recorded a whopping 18.

Perhaps Louis van Gaal’s much self-prophesized footballing ideals worked well at Barcelona and Bayern Munich, but they seem so alien to a club famed for flying forwards, blistering counter-attacks and relentless attacking play under Sir Alex Ferguson.

There have been many displays of this variety since the Dutchman took the helm two summers ago, but this scoreless draw felt particularly symptomatic. Upon the final whistle, LVG received a particularly loud and deserving chorus of boos from the Old Trafford faithful.

LINGARD AS PROMISING AS DEPAY WITHOUT THE PRICE TAG

It was not a good evening for any of Manchester United’s attackers but Memphis Depay was particularly disappointing.

Returning to a club he scored 28 goals for last season, leading them to an Eredivisie title whilst claiming the division’s Golden Boot, tonight was a fantastic chance for the 21-year-old to start coming good on his reputation as ‘the Dutch Cristiano Ronaldo’.

Instead, Depay failed to record a single successful dribble as his former team-mates predicted his repetitive ploy of looking to cut inside and shoot at every opportunity. Eventually, United’s £25million summer signing was subbed off after just 58 minutes.

Academy graduate Jesse Lingard, although failing to have a significant impact, was much busier than the Dutch international, recording four efforts at goal, one successful dribble, one tackle and one interception.

Surprisingly, considering one cost United a small fortune and the other cost them absolutely nothing, Lingard’s future at Old Trafford is looking a lot brighter than Depay’s at the minute.

Rooney undeserving of ‘undroppable’ status

Louis van Gaal has often claimed that no player is exempt from the punishment of getting dropped for poor performances, but that doesn’t seem to apply to captain Wayne Rooney.

The England international has been nothing short of abject this season, finding just two goals in eleven Premier League appearances and seven across all competitions, yet was instantly reinstated into United’s starting line-up for tonight’s game after missing Saturday’s 2-1 win over Watford with an injury.

The 30-year-old’s inclusion came at the expense of the consistently excellent Juan Mata but his performance certainly didn’t justify it. Despite starting in his apparently preferred No.10 role, Rooney had just one shot at goal and didn’t create a single chance in an entire ninety minutes.

Mata, meanwhile, who has been involved in the most goals of any United player since the turn of 2015, was issued nothing more than a six-minute substitute berth.

Van Gaal will surely insist that there is no favouritism in his selections but clearly Rooney is being given preferential treatment. For his sake and Rooney’s, the United skipper needs to be dropped for their next match.

Damning UEFA report lists Man Utd as having the 'most expensive squad EVER' – worth eye-watering £1.21 billion – as staggering fees for Jadon Sancho & Antony take Red Devils past 2020 record set by Real Madrid

Antony and Jadon Sancho make up a Manchester United squad that was "the most expensive ever assembled" in football, according to a new UEFA report.

Antony and Sancho signed for big feesUEFA reveals most expensive squad everDoesn't account for 2023-24 windowWHAT HAPPENED?

The report, taken by the European Club Finances and Investment Landscape, revealed Erik ten Hag's side to be worth £1.21bn ($1.52bn) by the end of the 2023 financial year. This beats the record in place since 2020 set by Real Madrid, whose illustrious team were worth an estimated £1.13bn ($1.42m) combined.

The signings of Antony and Sancho contributed heavily to that final 2023 sum. The Brazilian is yet to fully take off since signing for £82m ($103m) in 2022, while the England winger was recently loaned back to Borussia Dortmund after failing to live up to his £73m ($92m) price tag. Other noteworthy costs include £80m ($100m)-man Harry Maguire, signed back in 2019, as well as veteran Casemiro, for whom United splashed out £70m ($88m) in 2022. Indeed, the figures are damning when lined up with United's fortunes on the pitch, with the Red Devils still a long way off being able to challenge for the Premier League and Champions League.

DID YOU KNOW?

However, that report does not take into account United's spending after the 2023 financial year, meaning £72m ($90m) Rasmus Hojlund, £55m ($69m) Mason Mount and £47m ($59m) Andre Onana are all omitted from that staggering total.

UEFA's report adds that United's eye-watering sum is joined by Premier League rivals Manchester City, Chelsea, as well as European giants Real Madrid, who all topped £1bn ($1.26bn) in squad values for 2023. Todd Boehly's Blues were recently told they could spend up to another £350m ($439m) in the coming window, if the right player sales are sanctioned.

The decision will see them avoid another summer of uncertainty and leave them in danger of losing their captain next year. Spurs' summer window was dominated by uncertainty surrounding Kane, who opted to leave to join Bayern Munich. Had the Premier League side rejected Bayern's offer and forced Kane to stay, they would have lost him in a free transfer when his contract expired at the end of the season.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Son is already Spurs' top scorer this season, having scored three goals in just five Premier League appearances. The 31-year-old took over as captain this season after the departure of previous skipper Kane.

Barcelona player ratings vs Real Sociedad: Raphinha and Jules Kounde drop stinkers as title celebrations fall flat

The Blaugrana fell to a 2-1 defeat at Camp Nou as their fans turned out to welcome the new La Liga champions back home

A disappointing 90 minutes soured a day of celebration for Barcelona, as the newly-crowned La Liga champions turned in a miserable showing on the day they were due to lift the league trophy. And they were punished for their poor performance, as fourth-placed Real Sociedad cruised to a 2-1 win at Camp Nou.

La Real played spoiler early on, with Mikel Merino scoring after a Jules Kounde blunder in a rare start at centre-back for the France international. The visitors could have made it two after 30 minutes, but Marc-Andre ter Stegen denied a close range effort to keep the Blaugrana in it.

Barcelona enjoyed more of the ball in the second half, but looked much like a team that knew a trophy lift was on its way. Raphinha was ineffective on one wing, while the returning Ousmane Dembele looked tired on the other.

Manager Xavi made a series of attacking changes, but found his side exposed at the back. And La Real took advantage, with Barcelona-linked Martin Zubimendi finding Alexander Sorloth in acres of space for an easy finish. A late Robert Lewandowski header gave the Blaugrana life, but an equaliser never came.

GOAL rates Barcelona's players from Camp Nou…

  • Goalkeeper & Defence

    Marc-Andre ter Stegen (6/10):

Conceded for just the third time at Camp Nou this season inside 10 minutes. Made a point-blank save to prevent it from being two after 30. Could do nothing about the second goal.

    Alejandro Balde (6/10):

A puzzling start at right-back. Cut onto his left at every opportunity. Needs to play on the other side.

    Jules Kounde (3/10):

Insists he is a centre-back and was handed a start at the position. Gave the ball away in the build up to La Real's opener. Subbed at half-time after a poor 45 minutes.

    Andreas Christensen (6/10):

Solid all round, still reliable without his usual centre-back partner Araujo.

    Jordi Alba (5/10):

A good defensive effort, but failed to offer his usual quality in the attacking third.

    Midfield

    Sergio Busquets (6/10):

Did well in his penultimate Camp Nou appearance. Barcelona's stalling attack wasn't his fault. Got a standing ovation after being subbed with 10 minutes remaining.

    Frenkie de Jong (6/10):

Lost the ball in the run-up to La Real's second, a blip that marred an otherwise classy performance.

    Franck Kessie (5/10):

Linked with a move away in recent weeks. Came up with an unspectacular hour.

  • Getty Images

    Attack

    Raphinha (4/10):

Tried on both wings. Good on the ball, poor once he had to do anything impactful with it. Substituted on the hour after yet another disappointing showing.

    Robert Lewandowski (6/10):

Scored a lovely header after spending 88 minutes struggling with a solid La Real back four.

    Ousmane Dembele (5/10):

Moved to the left in a possible vision of the future. Completed eight dribbles in the first half alone. Final product was nowhere to be found, though. He will get better.

    Subs & Manager

    Marcos Alonso (4/10):

Half time sub to play left centre-back. Lost position altogether on the visitors' second.

    Ansu Fati (5/10):

Given 30 minutes to turn a 1-0 scoreline around. Had some nice touches, but is still off the pace

    Ferran Torres (3/10):

Was puzzling signing when he was bought, even more confusing now.

    Eric Garcia (N/A):

Brought on as a No.6, to varying degrees of success.

    Pablo Torre (N/A):

A rare and surprisingly energetic showing.

    Xavi (3/10):

A puzzling team selection with Pedri, Ronald Araujo and Gavi out. A couple of his choices, including moving Kounde to centre-back, didn't work out. Barcelona conceded early in the first half and midway through the second, and lacked creativity in the final third — late Lewandowski goal notwithstanding. One to forget.

The versatile Portugal international has been heavily linked with the Catalan giants for some time, with his undoubted ability of obvious appeal to ambitious outfits around the world. Barca had been hoping to do a deal for Cancelo back in January, with it claimed that City prevented them from completing a swoop in that window.

The Blaugrana have refused to throw in the towel on Cancelo, with claiming that agreement may now be close. Barca are said to have agreed terms on a contract with the 29-year-old – who can operate in both full-back positions – with talks taking place regarding the structure of a deal with City.

AND WHAT'S MORE

It is not yet clear how Barcelona will incorporate Cancelo into their ranks, with an initial loan agreement – similar to that which took the Portuguese to Bayern Munich in January – expected to be put in place. Said deal will include the option for a permanent transfer to be pushed through at a later date.

– Venho trabalhando forte desde o início do ano.

Corinthians inscreve Pedrinho e Yony González no Campeonato Paulista

MatériaMais Notícias

O Corinthians inscreveu Pedrinho e Yony González no Campeonato Paulista.
