Netherlands earned themselves a place in the tournament final, but more importantly a spot in the World Twenty20 in England, with a fine five-wicket victory over Scotland, with two full overs to spare. After a good start by their opponents, they fought back to restrict them severely, and then overcame a couple of sticky moments with the bat to reach the target in good time.Netherlands won the toss and decided to bowl first, a trend that is taking over at this low-scoring tournament. Scotland’s openers, however, made a mockery of the dismal starts achieved by most sides in recent matches, as Ryan Watson took Kyle Coetzer in first with him, and the pair quickly launched themselves into the type of opening partnership that is more to be expected in this type of cricket. It was mostly good clean hitting, with Coetzer lofting a six over long-on off Mudassar Bakhari in the third over. After 10 overs, the score was 50 without loss, but five runs later Watson swung across the line and was bowled by Peter Borren for 22, off 27 balls. Coetzer and Navdeep Poonia then concentrated mainly on singles, which came off most balls, but the search for yet another led to the run-out of Coetzer for 40 (44 balls, 2 sixes and 4 fours).Colin Smith quickly followed, holing out at long-on, but Pooniah and Gavin Hamilton settled for a sober partnership of accumulation with few extravagant strokes, aiming perhaps for a total of about 120, considering how difficult teams have found chasing smaller targets this tournament. With two overs left, the total was 98 for 3, but then Hamilton, aiming at extravagance virtually for the first time, holed out on the leg side.It takes so little to send a team on the slippery slope of disaster, and in quick succession Neil McCallum was caught at extra cover, also off Ryan ten Doeschate, and Poonia run out for 25. In moments the score had become 99 for 6. The final over saw Richie Berrington and Gordon Drummond run out and John Blain almost caught on the boundary off the final ball. The total was 107 for 8.It is easy to say Scotland lost their way after such a good start, but by the weird standards of this particular tournament, even to reach 100 is quite an achievement. ten Doeschate, with 3 for 23, was the most successful bowler, but the most economical was the opener Edgar Schiferli, who conceded only 18 runs, bowling mostly during the dominant opening partnership.Netherlands quickly lost Darron Reekers, caught at mid-on off a miscued pull. Twenty-nine runs came up in the first four overs without much more fuss from either side, the batsmen concentrating on frequent singles with only occasional slogs. At 50, in the ninth over, Tim de Grooth was caught at the wicket off Berrington for 24, and at the ten-over mark the score was 56 for 2.Bokari, having scored most of his 9 runs off the edge, was caught at slip, but Eric Szwarczynski and ten Doeschate batted steadily, largely in singles, to take the score to 81, when the former had a rush of blood, trying a big hit to leg, only to have the resulting skyer caught by the keeper, having made 30. He was soon followed by Daan van Bunge, caught at slip without scoring. At 83 for 5, was another serious collapse taking place?Borren, with two successive fours off Drummond, soon put paid to such nonsense. The end came quickly now, as ten Doeschate swung Majid Haq for six over square leg, and next ball followed it with a reverse-swept four to take Netherlands into the final. Eighteen runs came off that over – the sort of over that is more commonly expected in this type of cricket but so rarely seen at this tournament.ten Doeschate was unbeaten with 24 off 18 balls, while Borren had 16 off 12. Blain and Berrington had two wickets each.

Leicester City linked with Leon Bailey

Leicester City have been linked with a move for Bayer Leverkusen winger Leon Bailey as the Foxes look to bolster their first team squad even further.

What’s the story?

Premier League rivals Aston Villa have also been tracking the highly-rated 23-year-old in recent weeks, but Dean Smith’s side aren’t the only Premier League outfit in the running, according to 90min.com.

Everton, Wolves and Southampton are also credited with an interest in Bailey alongside the Foxes, with Leverkusen reportedly set to demand £30m for their prized asset.

Brendan Rodgers needs him

The Jamaica international has established himself as one of the Bundesliga’s most exciting attacking talents in recent years and enjoyed his most productive season yet in 2020/21.

Bailey has often struggled with consistency throughout his career, but he appeared to make significant progress on that front last season, bagging 15 goals in all competitions. He also provided 11 assists in his 40 appearances for Leverkusen, showcasing his tremendous creative talent as well as his goalscoring ability.

The diminutive forward terrorises opposition defences on a regular basis in Germany, using his electrifying pace and dribbling ability to devastating effect, assets which would provide an enormous boost to Leicester’s forward line.

Glowing reviews from Ronald de Boer and Rudi Voller sum up why. The Dutchman once commented: “He’s so fast it’s not normal. His speed, combined with his technique, is very rare. Exceptional. He has no weak points.”

Voller added: “He’s got extraordinary pace, he’s very skillful with the ball, and he will give further impetus to our attacking department.”

After the arrivals of Patson Daka, Boubakary Soumare and Ryan Bertrand at the King Power Stadium, Brendan Rodgers is thought to be targeting a centre-back and right winger for the remainder of the window.

With Marc Albrighton currently the only natural option on the right-hand side of the attack, Rodgers desperately needs another player in that position if he’s to finally lead the Foxes into the Champions League.

It remains to be seen whether the club’s hierarchy back up their interest with a concrete offer, but if the transfer budget allows, Leicester’s director of football Jon Rudkin must swoop for Bailey before a domestic rival secures his services.

In other news… Rodgers must axe Leicester flop this summer, he’s not good enough

Lara illness overshadows West Indies win

Brian Lara began the day against the Kenyan bowlers in unconvincing fashion before easing himself into the kind of form that makes some people rate him second to none with the willow.Scoring his 15th ODI ton – although perhaps not one he’ll treasure – Lara spurred West Indies on to a victory that will have helped salvage some pride after their loss against South Africa. The West Indies scored 261/6 and the Kenyans, despite a committed knock of 93 by skipper Steve Tikolo, could only muster 232 runs in their reply. Beating Kenya by 29 runs the men from the Caribbean will now have to pray that some miracle occurs when Kenya and South Africa meet. Tikolo’s team not only have to win, but must do so by a large margin. That Lara was not at his best was evident early on. The trademark shots, lashed with a slicing arc of the bat, appeared every now and then, but the ball did not disappear to the outfield as it usually does. As it turned out it was not a question of bad form. As soon as he completed his innings of 111 (137 minutes, 120 balls, eight fours, two sixes) he was examined by a doctor.Frequent breaks in his innings had suggested leg cramps, understandable in the unbearable humidity. But doctors were sufficiently concerned to rush the left-hander to hospital, where he will remain for tests and observation for 24 hours. An ICC release confirmed afterwards that he has suspected hepatitis. The Kenyans let themselves down in the field. The bowling was ragged and a more organised side than the West Indies would have made the Africans pay more dearly. Usually so athletic and agile, the Kenyans could hold on to their catches. No doubt coach Sandeep Patil will be organising extra fielding drills.Shivnarine Chanderpaul was one beneficiary. First when he had scored just three by Thomas Odoyo at fine-leg off the bowling of Martin Suji and later when a relatively easy chance at short mid-wicket was floored by Ravindu Shah. Tony Suji was the unfortunate bowler on this occasion. In the first game against South Africa, the Guyanese southpaw struggled, scoring 45 off as many as 98 balls. Today, he made 43 before falling to Maurice Odumbe – Kenya were let off lightly. But dropping Lara, however, is a different proposition altogether. When he was put down by Tony Suji at long-on Lara had 61 to his name. He made sure that the lapse cost Kenya an additional 50 runs.Even with a brisk opening partnership of 60 between Chris Gayle (33) and Chanderpaul, the West Indies found the going tough. Run scoring proved difficult, particularly against Odumbe’s off-spin. After 45 overs the score was a mere 204.Then came a spell of batting that made all the difference between the two sides.Wavell Hinds used the long handle to good effect smiting 20 runs off seven balls including a dramatic hit that sailed over extra cover for six. Fifty-seven runs came off the last five overs and West Indies had a respectable if not spectacular 261 to defend. When West Indies took the field, minus Lara, they had several points to prove. Mervyn Dillon would have been keen to snare a few wickets and restore his confidence after the game against South Africa where he conceded 16 runs including a wide at a crucial moment. It was, however, left-armer Pedro Collins who struck first, removing Kennedy Otieno for a duck.Ravindu Shah played some elegant strokes in his 27 but was undone by the leg-breaks of Mahendra Nagamootoo.Tikolo, widely-recognised as the best batsman in the world not to be playing Test cricket, dominated the Kenyan innings. Shoring up the middle-order with a 91-ball 93 he showed that Kenyans aspire to being competitive at the highest level. Inventive in his stroke play, he kept the scoreboard ticking over and the fielders on their toes until being cleaned up by a Dillon yorker. With dismissal of Tikolo in the 47th over the Kenyans did not have the resolve to go all the way and were all out for 232.

Spurs: Gold drops exciting transfer claim

Tottenham Hotspur correspondent Alasdair Gold has dropped an exciting transfer claim this week…

What’s the word?

The ever-reliable football.london reporter gave an insight into Spurs’ likely transfer plans during a recent Q&A session with supporters this week. He revealed that Spurs’ top priority is a new centre-back, whilst interest in long-time target Marcel Sabitzer remains.

Speaking about the Austrian, Gold said: “Still a player that Spurs have liked a lot for a long time but he’ll be in high demand when he returns from the Euros, particularly with his contract situation. Much depends on the new head coach, whether Paratici also likes him and whether there is the money in place from sales.

“Spurs’ priority is a centre-back but Sabitzer has certainly got admirers at the club.”

Exciting times ahead?

Amid all the uncertainty and chaos in their managerial search, this latest suggestion should come as hugely encouraging news, as once that new coach walks through the front door, Spurs mean business.

Individual mistakes and a lack of cohesion in the backline was perhaps their biggest issue under Jose Mourinho during the 2020/21 season. In some ways, you can see why the sacked Portuguese utilised as many as 16 different combinations at the back.

Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez have been slammed as the worst pairing in the Premier League by ex-Spurs midfielder Jamie O’Hara, whilst Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher believes that Serge Aurier is one of the “biggest liabilities” in the top-flight, so much so that he would put people off management.

Hugo Lloris has endured some blunders and Sergio Reguilon’s form tailed off massively after injury. Therefore, if Spurs are truly eyeing a new centre-back, then this is very exciting to hear from Gold.

The links to Sabitzer seem just as exciting, as the north Londoners have lacked a creative goal threat from midfield ever since Christian Eriksen departed for Inter Milan.

“I think he’d bring a lot to Tottenham. He’s very similar to Christian Eriksen, he’s that sort of player that Spurs have been missing in midfield,” claimed Bundesliga expert Daniel Pinder during an exclusive interview with Football FanCast.

It’s hard to ignore the talents of a player who has provided 25 goals and 18 assists since the start of the 2019/20 season. In that same time, Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso have combined for just 27 goal contributions between them.

All in all, Gold’s recent claim should have many supporters around north London buzzing.

West Indies upbeat

An optimistic West Indies coach Roger Harper is in Jamaica confident of a 2-1 series victory over India

17-May-2002An optimistic West Indies coach Roger Harper is in Jamaica confident of a 2-1 series victory over India. But he warns that Carl Hooper’s regional cricketers must perform to "the best of their ability" to defeat India in the decisive fifth and final Cable & Wireless Test which starts at Sabina Park tomorrow."I think if we play as well as we are capable of playing, we’ll win," Harper said confidently. The series is locked 1-1 after India’s 37-run victory in Trinidad was followed by a ten-wicket West Indies’ triumph in Barbados.Prior to leaving for Kingston 24 hours ago, the former Guyana captain and West Indies’ off-spinner told reporters he was generally satisfied with the performance of the West Indian cricketers in the first four Tests."The areas we were concerned about seem to be coming around. The openers got a bit of a start (and) we’ll like them to build on that and performed even a little better."We hope the middle can keep playing as well as it has been playing so far in the series and the lower order, with (Ridley) Jacobs coming and getting a hundred. We’ll like him to continue that form and build on it in Jamaica," Harper added. He has not lost faith with the fast-bowling quartet of Mervyn Dillon, Cameron Cuffy, Pedro Collins and Adam Sanford, even though India were able to amass their highest total of the series, 513 for nine declared in the high-scoring drawn fourth Test in Antigua."I think so far the fast bowlers have bowled pretty well. We had a bit of a tough surface here on which we asked them to operate on. They stuck to the task manfully and hopefully, we’ll get a little bit more assistance in Jamaica. I’m confident they will deliver the goods once again."The last time the West Indies played in Jamaica, they defeated South Africa last year in Courtney Walsh’s farewell, and Harper is confident the spectators will come out again in their numbers and give the Windies that much needed home support."The extra support you get at home is always a factor. In Jamaica, we have always been well supported and we expect with the series locked at one-all and so much at stake, we’ll be very well supported there," Harper said.He also said it would be beneficial for young West Indian bowlers if the same type of ball, which was now used in Test cricket, was also used in the regional Busta Cup Series and Red Stripe Bowl competitions."During this series we are using the Kookaburra ball which is the ball preferred by most Test-playing nations these days. It is an idea which has come about because we are trying to get our players used to playing with these balls so that when we go abroad, it is nothing new to us."But at the same time, I think we have to go one step further and start using these balls at our first-class levels so that players coming into the West Indies team as new players, will be used to playing with them."

Newcastle takeover news involving Benitez

A source from Newcastle United has shared some latest insight on the parties involved in the potential takeover, which interestingly involves Rafa Benitez.

The Lowdown: Bruce could be at risk

If the proposed deal between Mike Ashley and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium does eventually go through, then Steve Bruce could potentially be at risk of losing his job in the North East.

The new owners may want to go down a new pathway with regards to hiring a fresh new boss to take them to the next level, and given that Bruce was not appointed by them in the first place, the former Aston Villa and Sunderland coach may well be at risk.

In theory, a takeover at St. James’ Park could well be completed as early as July, if the arbitration case against the Premier League goes well for both Ashley and the Tyneside club, which would then in turn cast doubt over Bruce’s future going into the new season.

The Latest: Takeover insight involving Benitez

As per Football Insider, a source from the Magpies has shared the latest situation with regards to the ongoing takeover saga, which is that all parties involved in the bid are confident that the deal will go through after the arbitration proceedings.

Those working on the deal have also reportedly laid the groundwork for Benitez to return as the new manager in place of Bruce, and the Spaniard is their ‘top managerial target’.

The Verdict: Exciting times ahead

The fact that all of the parties involved in the potential deal are confident that it will go through after arbitration is certainly promising in terms of what could be expected of the results, and thus the process afterwards.

If arbitration does go in favour of the Toon, then it would certainly bring the potential revival of the takeover one step closer and thus give an incentive for the KSA’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) to come back to the table.

In a dream scenario, if the takeover could be completed by July after the hearing takes place, then NUFC could start looking at managers to take them into the new era, and none more so would fit perfectly than the return of Benitez.

A lot of Newcastle fans have previously called for the 61-year-old to come back, and so he would certainly be a popular appointment among the Toon Army.

Nonetheless, he has a vast amount of experience in managing in the Premier League, with teams on bigger transfer budgets like Liverpool and Chelsea, and so he should have little problems in handling the additional funds that would come with the takeover.
