England’s chairman of selectors, David Graveney, has confirmed that Darren Goughwill not be selected for the forthcoming Test series in New Zealand.Gough was omitted from the squad for the three-match series along with Surrey’s Alec Stewart after both players decided to miss the first part of the winter programme in India.Gough’s recent good form in India and New Zealand had led to speculation that England might ask him to stay on.”The players were offered a contract that encompassed two Test series in India and New Zealand,” Graveney said.”Darren decided he wanted a rest and that’s up to him. Therefore the squadswere chosen without him playing Test match cricket. He is an important guy but we have to stick to decisions that we have made.”There could be extreme circumstances with injuries or whatever – situationscould change. But at the present stage I am happy to let Duncan and Nasser get on with the cricket. Our situation hasn’t changed, whatever speculation there has been.”

Pakistan to name squad for England today

The Pakistan cricket team for next month’s tour to England will benamed on Tuesday evening, officials said, adding that the announcementof the coach will be announced later. The chairman of selectors Wasim Bari said Monday that he was informedby the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) that all the players were declaredfit by the panel of doctors and were now available for selection.Bari, however, said the team would be finalized and handed over to thePCB on Tuesday. He said he would be submitting a 16-man squad for thetwo-Test series while team for the tri-nation oneday series would benamed later.Bari indicated there was a possibility that an additional player mightbe sent to England. As things continued to remain complex and intriguing, former captainsWasim Akram and Moin Khan were left facing the axe in the backdrop ofrecent happenings.Wasim Akram, after a dismal performance in the two Tests againstEngland at home, failed to take part in the three-Test series againstNew Zealand because of inter-coastal injury. Nevertheless, sources sayskipper Waqar Younis was strongly opposing the selection of Wasimthough the vote of the chief selector was in the left-armer’s favour.Rashid Latif is being favoured over Moin because of Waqar’s firmbelief in the talent of the former who first blew the whistle ofbetting and match-fixing in Pakistan cricket. Not surprisingly injury prone and joy-rider, Shoaib Akhtar has onceagain been assured of a place in the squad after returning unfit fromthe tour to New Zealand in February. Brig Rana admitted that Shoaibneither appeared before the panel of doctors nor played in the ongoing one-dayers on the pretext that he was suffering from stomachupset.Likely 16:Waqar Younis (captain), Inzamam-ul-Haq (vice-captain), Saeed Anwar,Yousuf Youhana, Abdur Razzaq, Azhar Mahmood, Mohammad Sami, FaisalIqbal, Younis Khan, Mohammad Wasim, Imran Farhat, Rashid Latif(wicketkeeper), Shoaib Akhtar, Fazle Akbar and Mushtaq Ahmad, SaqlainMushtaq.

Diego Laxalt to never play for Celtic again

This summer is a crucial one in the history of Celtic Football Club. After such a dismal campaign, they will see a number of their players walk through the Parkhead exit door, never to return.

Odsonne Edouard and Kristoffer Ajer are prime candidates for a departure but the Hoops must also address the exits of a number of loanees.

What’s the word?

Celtic used the loan market wisely this season to fill gaps in their squad.

Jonjoe Kenny replaced Jeremie Frimpong at short notice in January while Diego Laxalt succeeded the selfish Boli Bolingoli at left-back.

However, it doesn’t look as though we’ll ever see Laxalt in a Celtic shirt again.

The Hoops were pondering a £7.2m move for the Uruguayan but due to his form in the final weeks of the season, they’ve decided against a permanent switch.

That’s according to Il Milanista (via Sport Witness) who reveal the Bhoys have performed a U-turn on the defender.

They suggest that Milan were ready to negotiate a deal with Celtic but the Glaswegian side abruptly changed their mind right at the end of the season.

Consequently, Laxalt will return to Italy in time for the next campaign.

Fans must be elated

This news is likely to go down incredibly well with the fan base at Paradise.

They’ve not had much to cheer about this season but seeing Laxalt walk out the exit door will be a welcome sight.

At points, he’s looked the full package for Celtic. It’s not often you’ll sign a player from one of Europe’s elite clubs with plenty of international caps.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-manager-and-transfer-news-howe-favre-mcgregor-mccann-tierney” title=”Read the latest Celtic manager and transfer news!”]

Unfortunately, he’s not lived up to his full billing consistently enough. From a defensive point of view, he’s been incredibly abject.

Laxalt has been impressive going forward but when it comes to actions inside his own half, there is a lot to be desired.

The full-back was run ragged by Lawrence Shankland in the 0-0 draw with Dundee United before Joe Aribo left him dazed and perplexed during their Scottish Cup defeat to Rangers.

As they crashed out to their biggest rivals, the Uruguay international was described as a “horror show” by ACSOM host Paul John Dykes.

It was easy to see why. He was caught up the field as Aribo burst forward for Rangers’ opening goal and then was beaten all ends up for the second strike.

The Gers winger took up possession and twisted this way and that before leaving Laxalt for dust.

With Greg Taylor and then Adam Montgomery usurping him in the pecking order during the final weeks of the season, it will come as no surprise to see the left-back depart.

He has been disappointing for a number of months now; supporters will be all too pleased to see him depart for good.

Pundit says Leeds man could be ‘devastated’

Leeds United youngster Alfie McCalmont may feel ‘devastated’ about an update regarding his future, according to ex-Whites striker Noel Whelan.

The Lowdown: McCalmont’s future up in the air

The 21-year-old has still only made two first-team appearances for Leeds, spending last season on loan at Oldham Athletic.

According to Peterborough United’s director of football, Barry Fry, McCalmont has been offered to the Championship club as part of a deal to bring an unnamed player the other way.

They have turned down the move, however, meaning the youngster’s future remains very much up in the air.

The Latest: Whelan feels sorry for youngster

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan admitted it is a tough position for McCalmont to find himself in, saying he may need to move elsewhere, in order to kick on in his career:

“I think as a player, if I was out Alfie, I’d feel devastated. He’s done very well when he’s been out on loan this season. That will be very disheartening to the player.

“But depending on whether they’ve had talks and saying they’re going to need a different type of player and he will be used very sparsely, then on a player’s point of view again, you’ve got to feel that you need to kickstart your career.

“Sometimes it’s not at the respective club where you’ve been at for a number of years and come through the academy. Sometimes you have to break away and start your own future in football. Maybe it needs to be away from a very big club like Leeds.”

The Verdict: Time for a fresh challenge?

The fact that Marcelo Bielsa was seemingly willing to let McCalmont leave suggests he has no future at the club, assuming it would have been a permanent exit.

Leeds have made giant strides in recent years and it may simply be that they have reached a level where the Northern Irishman cannot cut the mustard.

It is a reminder of the brutal nature of top-level football and a move away from Elland Road for McCalmont could be beneficial for all parties.

Liverpool predicted XI to face Southampton

Liverpool are back in Premier League action tonight following a two-week break as they host Southampton at Anfield.

Last Sunday, the Reds’ away clash at Old Trafford to face Manchester United was postponed due to fan protests. It means that Jurgen Klopp’s men come into the clash with Saints having most recently drawn 1-1 with Newcastle United.

How many changes could the German be tempted to make for tonight’s game?

We are anticipating just two alterations at Anfield on Saturday evening from the Newcastle game, neither of them enforced.

First and foremost, Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson will be selected in between the sticks.

There will likely be one change in the defence in front of him, though. The headline switch will be Nathaniel Phillips’ return to the backline after a slight layoff,. as Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that the 24-year-old has recovered from a problem which was keeping him out.

The £64k-per-week defender – who has won a squad-high 5.5 headers per game this season – will replace Fabinho, who should move back into his preferred position in the centre of the park. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ozan Kabak and Andrew Robertson should all remain in the back four.

Whilst Fabinho will be reintroduced into midfield, there could be another slight change alongside him, as Thiago Alcantara is likely to drop out to make room for the returning Phillips.

James Milner could come into the team, rounding off a midfield three of him, the Brazilian and Georginio Wijnaldum.

The veteran England midfielder could replace Diogo Jota. The Portuguese forward is five without a goal in all competitions and could likely drop down the bench. This would duly see Klopp field his regular front three of Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.

Man Utd fans slam Bailly contract

Many Manchester United fans have been left to fume after The Old Trafford faithful announced that Eric Bailly has signed a new deal at the club.

As per the official website of the Red Devils, the Ivory Coast international will stay at MUFC until June 2024, with the option of a further year.

This has certainly caused a stir among several United supporters, given that his injury record is nothing short of woeful (16 separate injuries at Old Trafford), and he has now been given a bumper contract despite having no guarantees over how many games he will be able to play due to his ongoing injury problems.

At 27 years of age, Bailly still has some resale value, and some Red Devils may have been wanting to sell the central defender in the summer transfer window as they may miss the chance to profit from his eventual departure as he approaches his thirties.

These MUFC supporters fumed upon reading the news of Bailly’s deal on Twitter, with one fan even going as far as to claim that it was a ‘ridiculous’ decision:

“Really poor business imo, really like Bailly but his injury record is ridiculous. For me this means we are not signing a CB this summer.. and we will be stuck with Maguire and Lindelof”

Sheffield Wednesday eye Rhodes replacement?

It appears that Sheffield Wednesday have their sights set on bringing a new striker to Hillsborough Stadium this summer…

What’s the word?

According to The72, the Owls are eyeing a move for Rochdale striker Stephen Humphrys ahead of the upcoming transfer window, though they face competition from a host of other EFL clubs.

Championship rivals Blackburn, Preston, Bristol City, Stoke and Nottingham Forest are all in the race and it is thought that all six are ‘very interest and likely to make a move’ in the summer.

It remains to be seen how much the 23-year-old forward would cost as he will still have a year to run on his contract at Spotland come to the end of the season.

Rhodes replacement

Regardless of the division the Owls find themselves in next season, it is likely to be ‘all change’ at Hillsborough under Moore as several players are out of contract, including their only senior striker, Jordan Rhodes.

The 31-year-old is on the verge of becoming the Championship’s all-time record goalscorer and has interest from elsewhere in the division, but recently remained tight-lipped on his future. He told YorkshireLive:

“That’s for the powers-to-be,” Rhodes said. “It’s out of my control.”

Humphrys is a physical threat at a little over 6-foot and would seem primed for the next step-up having impressed immensely at the League One strugglers. His proven record in the division also makes for great appeal should Wednesday go down this campaign.

The former Fulham graduate has provided nine goals and four assists in 25 league appearances, as per Transfermarkt. Even despite the Dale sitting precariously at the foot of the table.

As per WhoScored figures, Humphrys ranks second at Spotland for average rating for the season (7.09) and has fired off a whopping 3.6 shots per game, of which 1.8 come from inside the penalty area – very much like the goal-poaching Rhodes.

Earlier this year, journalist and Rochdale fansite owner Chris Fitzgerald lauded the 23-year-old as being “a different level.”

If the Owls are to finally move on from the long-serving Scotsman this summer, then they should look no further than Humphrys.

Howey backs NUST’s fundraising attempt

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Steve Howey, who made 270 appearances during his career, has backed the Newcastle United Supporters trust who are trying to raise enough money to buy a 1% stake in the club, once Mike Ashley leaves.

The trust believes they will require about £3 million to have enough money to purchase a 1% ownership in the club, once new owners come in.

The initiative has already more than £50,000 and is being backed by people such as Alan Shearer, Rob Lee and George Caulkin, who is an ambassador for the move, and considering his strong links to Amanda Staveley that appears a smart move.

Speaking on why there’s nothing wrong with fans trying to own some of their club and what should happen to the money if they aren’t successful, Howey told FFC:

“I think there’s nothing wrong with actually trying to do it but obviously you’ve got fans that will be thinking ‘what’s the point’ and that it’s a waste of time.

“If you can raise enough funds for it then it’ll be absolutely brilliant but if the new owners don’t want the money that’s been raised then surely it can go to different charities around Newcastle.”

Mike Ashley thought he had eventually sold the club almost 12 months ago when he accepted a big from PCP Capital Partners, only for the Premier League to block the deal.

The Magpies currently sit six points above the relegation zone with just seven games remaining which will keep Ashley’s valuation of the club intact.
