Atapattu tipped to coach SL in England

Sri Lanka’s chief selector Sanath Jayasuriya issued the strongest indication yet that Marvan Atapattu would be appointed coach for the tour of Ireland and England, following Paul Farbrace’s resignation on Tuesday.Jayasuriya, head of coaching Jerome Jayaratne, and cricket committee chairman Ranjit Fernando have been appointed in a three-member committee to formulate SLC’s next move. The panel is expected to recommend a coach – in at least an interim capacity – to the board on Monday.Atapattu had applied for the head coach position when Graham Ford announced he would vacate the job, and had progressed to the final round of interviews in November, before Farbrace was appointed. Atapattu has been Sri Lanka’s batting coach since for three years, and was promoted to assistant coach in March 2013.”We should look to give responsibility to Marvan because he’s been around for a few years,” Jayasuriya said. “But we haven’t taken any decisions yet. The first step is to have a discussion with Marvan and clear up how to approach this issue, particularly in light of the fast-approaching England tour.”We had had a plan for the tour, part of which was to send a group of about six players to England early, which we were hoping Paul would facilitate. Now that he’s gone, we’ve got to find another way to do that.Atapattu has earned a reputation for his technical acumen – as a coach, as he had been as a player – but he was deemed unready for head coach role late last year. Both Farbrace and Ford have publicly lauded his work ethic.”We need to ask Marvan what he feels, and how he’s going to do things before we make any decisions,” Jayasuriya said.SLC also confirmed it would not receive compensation from Farbrace nor the ECB, for Farbrace’s early departure. His contract had stipulated he give six months’ notice before leaving the role, but as he had quit within his six-month probationary period, that former clause was made void.SLC will in effect have also lost a figure believed to be around Rs. 8 million (USD $60,000) on hosting the Yorkshire county side for a pre-season tour. The costs of tour had been the bulk of the compensation SLC paid for having Farbrace released early from his Yorkshire contract.”We had the probation clause to benefit both parties,” SLC assistant secretary Hirantha Perera said. “From our side if he hadn’t gelled well with the team, we would have had the chance to terminate his contract. What we had been after is a settled coach for the 2015 World Cup”SLC were recently compelled to cough up an undisclosed sum for terminating Geoff Marsh’s contract, three months into his tenure in 2011. Marsh’s contract had not carried a probationary period.

Reforço no meio-campo

Rain looms over the second ODI between India and West Indies in Vizag, even as the visitors try and sort out their brittle batting

Big Picture Rain extended a foreboding welcome to both teams in Visakhapatman as their flight – delayed by 45 minutes – touched down amid a downpour. Cyclone Helen, the second storm to hit India’s east coast in as many months, meant the outfield at the Rajasekhara Reddy Stadium was too soggy for either team to go through with their scheduled training sessions on the eve of the game. But officials at the ground were still confident of a full match on Sunday, provided there was no further rain.West Indies have an abysmal pattern of batting collapses on this tour, which continued despite the more “familiar” environments of a limited-overs encounter. Darren Bravo was the only source of resolve in the first ODI, playing as close to his body as possible and consciously rotating the strike, while his peers including his brother and captain, Dwayne, perished to needless shots born from poor game sense.Their quest for betterment will be impaired by Chris Gayle returning home to tend to a hamstring injury. Also, Ottis Gibson, the coach, was worried about his side’s ability to execute plans. “At every stage, we are way ahead of our targets or on-par with where we want to be [but] we have lost one or two wickets too many,” he said on the eve of the game.India’s list of concerns is rather thin, though Yuvraj Singh’s reintegration to the one-day unit is still a work in progress. Starved of match-practice, he looked as woeful as he could be majestic when in form during his brief stay at the crease before India’s victory in the last match. Suresh Raina faces a similar challenge, lacking in runs and pushed down from his position at No. 4 to allow Yuvraj some time in the middle.Form guideIndia WWWLW (last five completed games, most recent first)
West Indies LLLTWIn the spotlight Johnson Charles was the only West Indian batsmen to defy the up-and-down Kochi pitch and score at over a run-a-ball. He has the capability to diminish the effect of Gayle’s absence, with his proclivity to stay balanced and strike straight down the ground. The challenge, however, is whether he can remain at the crease long enough to provide a solid base, instead of just a handy cameo.India’s plans to groom Suresh Raina as a No. 4 batsman seem a fickle endeavour, as he was pushed down the order in Kochi and then bagged a duck. But he still made his presence felt in the game, with three top-order wickets. Will he have any impact in Visakhapatnam?Team newsMS Dhoni is rather noted for sticking to a winning combination but seamer Jaydev Unadkat could not summon enough consistency in his six-over spell and might have to fend off stiff competition from the usually bankable Mohit Sharma.India (probable) 1 Rohit Sharma, 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Suresh Raina, 5 Yuvraj Singh, 6 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Jaydev Unadkat/Mohit Sharma, 11 Mohammed ShamiChris Gayle’s search for a quick single forced a rupture of his left hamstring and he had to be stretchered off the field. Kieran Powell, who opened for them in Tests, seems set to perform the role in the remaining ODIs. Gayle being ruled out could also be the lifeline Narsingh Deonarine needs to present himself in better light.West Indies (probable) 1 Kieran Powell, 2 Johnson Charles (wk), 3 Darren Bravo, 4 Marlon Samuels, 5 Narsingh Deonarine, 6 Lendl Simmons, 7 Dwayne Bravo (capt), 8 Darren Sammy, 9 Sunil Narine, 10 Ravi Rampaul, 11 Jason HolderPitch and conditions The outfield at Rajasekhara Reddy Stadium has been subjected to a lot of water over the past few days and the probability of rain on the day of the match cannot be ruled out.Stats and trivia Shikhar Dhawan needs four more runs to complete 1000 in ODIs for 2013 West Indies have crossed 250 five times in 21 matches this year, two of which were against Zimbabwe. Watson and Rogers make positive start

ScorecardShane Watson and Chris Rogers put on 170 opening the batting together for the first time•Getty Images

Australia’s last great opening pair of Justin Langer and Matthew Hayden were unearthed only when Michael Slater was dropped for a combination of poor form and wayward behaviour. Twelve years later, Shane Watson and Chris Rogers have been thrown together as the most visible on-field consequence of David Warner’s suspension and Darren Lehmann’s arrival as coach. On the evidence of their opening union at New Road, this might just become another triumph out of the chaos.Even if the modesty of Worcestershire’s attack is accounted for, Watson made batting look easy during his domineering century before lunch and Rogers provided an immediately reassuring sight at the other end. Their first stand tallied 170 in all, precisely half of the Australians’ 340 before rain brought an early conclusion to a chilly day. Fluency came less easily to Ed Cowan and the captain Michael Clarke, though both passed 50 before falling prey to run-outs.Having wrought similar destruction in his first match restored to the top of the batting order against Somerset, Watson crashed the Worcs bowlers to all parts of the ground without ever looking like he was taking undue risks. Tellingly, it was Watson’s first hundred at first-class level since his most recent Test century, against India at Mohali in October 2010. The confidence imbued by Lehmann’s decision to publicly announce him as an Ashes opener as early as last week in Taunton has returned Watson to something like his imperious best.Rogers played with far less extravagance, but appeared an ideal partner, rotating the strike and leaving the ball with precision. Their unbeaten stand meant that Cowan, made redundant as an opening batsman after 18 months in the job, remained padded up in the tourists’ viewing area for the whole of the morning. When he did appear following Watson’s exit, Cowan found the going altogether more difficult, confirming the impression that he will struggle to impose himself on a bowling attack, a skill usually expected of a No. 3. Any hard decisions about the shape of Australia’s batting line-up can be expected to be made this week. Along with Lehmann and Rod Marsh, the national selector John Inverarity is also in Worcester, ready to submit his casting vote if required.A correct call at the toss by Clarke had given the visitors first use of a friendly, even-paced surface. This allowed Rogers and Watson to commence the opening partnership identified by Clarke and Lehmann as Australia’s best means by which to blunt England’s new-ball battery next week at Nottingham and beyond.

World-leaders … in run-outs

Australia’s unwholesome penchant for run-outs was on display again against Worcestershire, maintaining perhaps the only trend in which they have been world leaders over the past four years.
Since the start of the 2009 Ashes series in England, Australia players have been run out in Tests no fewer than 25 times, the most in the world by a margin of five. While Ricky Ponting was the most frequent transgressor with five during the period, Shane Watson, Phillip Hughes and Ed Cowan have all been caught short twice.
At New Road the causes were variable, as ever. Michael Clarke was called through by Cowan for a tight single and found short by a direct hit. Cowan stumbled and fell in mid-pitch, leaving him no chance to beat a throw from cover.
Watson is no expert on successful running, but agreed such details would be critical to the outcome of the Ashes. “It’s certainly a tough enough job to bat for long periods of time let alone giving the opposition one or two wickets,” he said. “We can’t afford to have our better batsmen run out.”

Wearing the Australia coat of arms for the first time since his one Test match in 2008, Rogers began a little nervously. He was perilously close to falling lbw to Charles Morris, making his first-class debut for Worcs, and his first few runs were snicked rather than struck. But Australia have employed Rogers for his record of making consistent runs, not the manner in which they arrive, and he was soon finding his stride, scoring at a steady trot with the occasional edge here and there.Watson had not taken part in the Australians’ second innings against Somerset, following a brazen 90 on day two that expressed his joy at returning to the top of the order more succinctly than any interview could. He continued on his merry way, gliding the first ball of the match to the backward point boundary and thereafter playing his shots with complete conviction, bordering on disdain.Several of Watson’s drives scorched through fields that did not have time to move, while the left-armer Jack Shantry had one delivery deposited beyond the sight screen with rare crispness – his preference for around the wicket provided Watson with an amiable angle by which to flick through the leg side. It was with one such stroke that Watson reached three figures, drawing strong applause from a plentiful crowd and warm congratulations from his new batting partner. The afternoon did not quite find Watson in the same flowing form of the morning, and he added only another seven runs to his lunch tally before swinging an offbreak by Moeen Ali to deep-backward square leg. Rogers reached 50 and continued on with increasing certainty, making it a surprise when he popped an off-side catch from a leading edge off Shantry.Cowan clattered one six off Moeen but was otherwise circumspect, while Clarke negotiated his first ball with a thick inside edge and had trouble locating the middle of his bat for some time. Together they negotiated 38 balls without a run during the hour before tea. The sequence was broken by a fortunate Clarke boundary, edged wide of the slip cordon, but both batsmen would fall short of the substantial scores they desired.Clarke was short of his ground when the stumps were hit from square leg by Alexei Kervezee. It appeared Cowan’s call, and Clarke looked notably miffed to depart in such a manner. Cowan followed his captain to the pavilion a little more than five overs later, stumbling in mid-pitch to turn a tight-ish run into an ignominious exit.Steve Smith and Phillip Hughes did not have much time to get established before the showers arrived, but they were batting in such a comfortable scenario because Watson and Rogers had excelled in the morning. England will be taking note.

Swann, Finn prove England have a Plan B

If not, perhaps, quite a perfect day for England, but a day when several pieces of their pre-Ashes jigsaw fell into place with a satisfying click as they proved they have a Plan B to their bowling attack

The Report by George Dobell26-May-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsNick Compton’s failure was the only obvious downside of an otherwise quite perfect day for England•Getty ImagesIf not, perhaps, quite a perfect day for England, but a day when several pieces of their pre-Ashes jigsaw fell into place with a satisfying click. Most pertinently, this was a day when England proved their bowling attack had a Plan B. While it is routinely suggested that, when the ball does not swing, the England bowling attack looks toothless and one dimensional, here they showed that they have what it takes to damage opposition sides when there is no such help. With James Anderson and Stuart Broad – the destroyers of New Zealand at Lord’s – struggling to gain the same seam or swing movement, it was left to Graeme Swann and Steven Finn to find another way through the tourists’ batting. With Finn generating impressive pace and maintaining a hostile line and length and Swann demonstrating beguiling drift and sharp turn, England ended the day having inked in their first choice bowling attack for the Ashes.Swann cannot have the fondest memories of this ground. He had never previously taken a Test wicket here and, a year ago, was dropped for the second Test against South Africa. But in a spell of three wickets for one run in seven balls he not only dismantled a disappointingly fragile New Zealand middle-order but proved that he was back to his best after elbow surgery had forced him out of the Tests in New Zealand. As so often before, Swann struck in his first over. Gaining a surprising amount of turn, Swann beat Dean Brownlie’s somewhat loose stroke with one that turned through the gate to hit the top of off stump. Next over, having set-up Martin Guptill with some flat deliveries, Swann tossed one up, drew the batsman forward and again turned one through the gate to hit the top of off stump. Two deliveries later, Kane Williamson was out too. Moving across his stumps to negate Swann much in the way demonstrated by Hashim Amla in 2012, Williamson was beaten by turn and struck on the pad. While Marais Erasmus turned down the appeal, England reviewed and were rewarded. It was the first of two decisions overturned from England reviews in the session. While Tim Southee was originally given not out following a leg before appeal from Broad – the umpire quite reasonably unable to say whether ball had hit bat or pad first – reviews showed it had struck the pad first and was going on to hit leg stump.Moments later Swann had Doug Bracewell taken at silly point, prodding forward to one that turned and took bat and pad, before Broad had Brendon McCullum, clearly struggling with a bad back after being forced back into service as wicketkeeper, caught behind as he poked at one that seamed in a little.Swann ignoring weather forecast

Graeme Swann defended England’s decision not to enforce the follow-on after demolishing New Zealand for the second time in a week.

New Zealand survived only 43.4 overs at Headingley, to be dismissed for 174, only a few days after collapsing to 68 all out at Lord’s.

“It was a pretty unanimous decision,” Swann said. “There is a lot of cricket left in the game. The best way to win that game, we felt, was to put a fatigued New Zealand side back into the field. The bowlers weren’t too happy to go back out bowling and you can’t blame them. We want to build a formidable lead and let the pitch deteriorate and the footholds develop and give us the best chance of bowling them out in the second innings.

The prospect of rain on the final day did not unsettle Swann. “I always ignore British weather forecasts,” he said. “If you start looking at that you are missing the point. If it rains all of Tuesday, it rains all of Tuesday. I can’t remember ever sitting in a professional dressing room where a two-day forecast has been believed. It was supposed to be nagging it down all last week at Lord’s and we played.”

It left Swann with the best figures – 4 for 42 – by an England spinner in a Test in Leeds since John Emburey took 5 for 82 against Australia in 1985 and had New Zealand pondering over the wisdom of going into the game without a specialist spinner and with two left-arm seamers whose foot marks had provided rough for Swann to exploit. But if Swann takes the plaudits, it was Finn who made the initial breakthrough. After New Zealand’s openers had batted with fluency in reaching 55 without loss, Finn claimed the first three wickets in a sustained spell of hostile fast bowling. After prompting an error from Peter Fulton, caught and bowled off the leading edge as he tried to work a ball that bounced more than he expected into the leg side, Finn persuaded Hamish Rutherford to push at one angled across him which resulted in a sliced edge to gully and then forced Ross Taylor to play-on. It was due reward for a wonderfully sustained spell of bowling where Finn had cramped Taylor for room, struck him twice on the body and finally provoked the false stroke.New Zealand’s last pair of Neil Wagner and Trent Boult thrashed 52 runs in 27 balls – Wagner thrashed four fours in an over off Broad before Boult thumped Swann for a four and two successive sixes in the next over – but when Anderson returned to end the innings, New Zealand had conceded a first innings lead of 180.Perhaps surprisingly given the far from promising weather forecast, England decided not to enforce the follow-on – with day one washed out the follow-on target was 150-behind – and opted instead for another bat.Alastair Cook, cutting and driving with freedom, was at his most fluent against an attack lacking Trent Boult, who was absent with a side strain. The England captain raced to his half-century off 63 balls and dominated an opening stand of 72 in 20 overs. But the only obvious downside in the entire day for England was the failure of Nick Compton. He was clearly mindful of the vultures circling around him and laboured for 45 deliveries for his seven runs before falling to a bat-pad catch at short-leg. It is only three Tests since he registered back-to-back Test centuries, but it seems some have short memories.Jonathan Trott found life little easier. Struggling to deal with the rough outside his off stump and some tight seam bowling, he managed only 11 off 69 deliveries, and, though he had helped Cook stretch the lead to 296 by stumps, England hardly forced home their advantage in the final 90 minutes. Still, it is England’s policy – rightly or wrongly – to not allow the possibility of weather disruption to influence their game plan and, with nearly 200 overs left in the game, they remain in an overwhelmingly dominant position.

J Syed Mohammad, though, on first-class debut took four wickets to make sure Tripura didn’t get away with the draw.Chasing 62, Assam raced to the target through Pallavkumar Das’ scored 52 off 60 as the openers ensured Assam got the bonus point too.

At 92 for 5, still needing 215 to make Himachal Pradesh bat again, Kerala were all set to lose comprehensively, but their stubborn lower order helped them salvage one point in Nadaun. Their No. 6 Rohan Prem scored his fifth first-class hundred, and frustrated the hosts in the company of Robert Fernandez and Raiphi Gomez.Prem and Fernandez saw off 42 overs. Fernandez scored 31 in a little over two hours. Part-timer Prashant Chopra dismissed Fernandez, but Himachal ran into more resistance. Prem and Gomez stayed together for 28 overs, to deny Himachal a victory. Gomez scored 15 off 86 deliveries. Himachal got three first-innings points. “Tried our best to enforce an outright win,” Himachal batsman Aakash Chopra tweeted. “But not to be. Kerala’s batsmen batted really well. Not a bad start to the season though.”

Syed Sahabuddin was the base around which Andhra’s fight revolved, but he was left stranded on 78.The last four partnerships were worth 54, 65, 17 and 31. Suraj Yadav and Shadab Nazar, though, did enough for Services with three wickets each. Services walked away with three points.
