Newcastle leading Marcus Rashford race

A big update has emerged regarding Newcastle United and their pursuit of Manchester United winger Marcus Rashford.

What’s the talk?

Transfer insider Dean Jones has claimed that the Magpies are one of two clubs set to be at the front of the pack for the England international this summer. He has revealed that PIF are ready to go head-to-head with Arsenal to land the Red Devils ace, with the attacker potentially on his way out of Old Trafford at the end of the season.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “I think as soon as Rashford’s future came into doubt, we did a story on the fact that Arsenal and Newcastle would be the two teams expected to lead the chase for Rashford, and I think that is the case.”

Joy to watch

Manchester United reporter Rich Fay once dubbed Rashford a “joy to watch”, and that is what the 24-year-old would be to the Newcastle faithful next season if the club can reach an agreement for him.

He is a proven Premier League performer who has the ability on the ball to get fans off their seats with excitement. In 293 games for the Red Devils, he has scored 93 goals and provided 58 assists, including 59 goals and 39 assists in the top flight.

Rashford is reportedly valued at €100m (£84m) by Manchester United, and it may be justified by his age and his form from last season.

Whilst he has only scored four times in the league this term, he managed an outstanding 11 goals and 11 assists in the Premier League in the 2020/21 campaign. This shows that he does have the ability to score and create goals on a regular basis at the top level, even if he is not showing it at the moment.

He also led Europe in completed nutmegs that season, with 18 in the top flight. This was after he also topped the charts in 2019/20 with 13 nutmegs, which suggests that he will be a joy to watch for supporters as he makes defenders look silly with his impressive dribbling.

At the age of 24, he also has plenty of time left to develop and improve even further. He is not at the end of his career and lacking the time to develop his game, which means that Howe can work with him to help the English forward to fulfill his potential and become a major player for the Toon.

It is now down to PIF to ensure that they win the race between themselves and Arsenal to bring Rashford to St James’ Park.

In the end, only two players, Sahara Group and Bharti Airtel, submitted bids for the right to sponsor the Indian team. Both Sahara, the existing sponsors, and Airtel bought the tender document at the last possible minute before the submission deadline, and Cricinfo has learnt both companies have submitted the mandatory Rs 50 crore (US$10.7 million) deposit required by the BCCI.The Indian board issued the tender on Monday inviting companies to bid for the rights, whose tenure is three-and-a-half years beginning July 1, 2010. Other companies in the fray included the ADA Group (ADAG), consumer electronics major Videocon, Delhi-based Monnet-Ispat, sports broadcaster Nimbus, which owns the rights to matches played in India, and advertising firm Percept.A source close to Nimbus said the broadcaster was approached by ADAG on Saturday morning, as its top brass was reluctant to commit as much as Rs 400 crore (US$ 85.6m) on its own. Nimbus, meanwhile, was trying to put together a consortium to bid for the rights, but was unable to pull it off due to the short time-span – less than a week – between the date the tender was released and the date the bids were submitted. “They released the tender on Monday and all the bids need to go in by Saturday, which is just about four working days by the time the tender was in hand. That is not very easy to work out when you are trying to get people to commit to Rs 400 crore.”It was reported widely that the BCCI was against consortiums bidding for the rights, but one of the interested players, who was among the first to pick the document, said that the board never had any issues there. “They had sent a clarification stating they did not want any marketing agencies to be part [of the consortium].”The BCCI has set a base price of Rs 2.5 crore per match for a three-and-a-half year period, during which India will be playing between 144 and 167 matches, depending on how far the team progresses in the ICC tournaments. The current price represents a 16% discount from the tender the board issued late last year, which had a base price of Rs 3 crore per match, and failed to attract a single bid. As a stop gap measure, the Sahara Group agreed to extend its sponsorship of the Indian team for a further six months, a period that ends on June 30.The lack of interest in the tender six months ago and the subsequent lowering of the base price represents “the impact of the IPL,” according to Hiren Pandit, Managing Partner-Entertainment, Sports and Partnerships at Group M, a prominent media buying agency. Pandit believes the IPL gives firms an alternative avenue to get involved with cricket, thereby reducing the exclusiveness of the Indian team. After winning the bid for the Pune IPL franchise, Sahara chairman Subrata Roy had said the company would re-evaluate its sponsorship of the Indian team. Subsequently, when contacted by Cricinfo, the company declined to comment to on whether it would be bidding this time around. The Sahara Group had paid roughly Rs 400 crore in 2005 for the right to sponsor the Indian team for four years. At least one prospective bidder, who bought the bid document, thought the current base price was still too high. “Anyone who bags the rights will have to spend on an average 125 crore annually only on this. That is a huge amount of money.”Shailendra Singh, joint managing director, Percept Limited, which had reportedly purchased the bid document for a client, says the Indian team is still the best cricket brand around. “From a value perspective, the sport of cricket stands unparalleled as a property for sponsors today,” he said. “For any fan, especially in India, the national team is the ultimate. People follow IPL because you have the cricketers from the Indian team playing, they are the main attraction. Hence this in no way reduces the importance or following of Team India. Team India will be one of the best cricket properties always.”The BCCI will announce the winning bid after holding its marketing committee meeting in Mumbai on Monday.

Durham skittle MCC for 162

Close Durham 7 for 2 (Smith 4*, Blackwell 3*, Kirby 2-3) and 459 for 9 declared (Coetzer 172, Di Venuto 131, Malan 4-20) lead MCC 162 (Malan 41, Borthwick 4-27) by 304 runs with eight wickets remaining

Durham put both the MCC batsmen and the much-hyped pink ball through their paces today, skittling their opponents for 162 to take control after two days of the county curtain-raiser.After MCC laboured in stifling heat for just three wickets with the lurid ball on day one, 18 fell on day two. Durham were seven for two at the close – 304 ahead – having declined to enforce the follow-on. They declared their first innings on 459 and went on to make light work of an opposition sorely missing Mark Ramprakash, who flew home yesterday morning.England outcast Steve Harmison took two wickets in a fiery spell with the new ball, while 19-year-old legspinner Scott Borthwick returned four for 27. Durham started on 329 for three but lost Ian Blackwell to Steve Kirby in the first over of the day. Ben Stokes, on his first-class debut, was in at six and mixed a little luckwith some muscular hitting to survive a testing early spell. Kyle Coetzer, 123 not out after batting through day one, added just one run in the first 35 minutes before steering Murtagh through gully for four.Stokes, meanwhile, clubbed Dean Cosker back over his head for six as he shouldered the brunt of the scoring while Coetzer dropped anchor. Durham ticked past 400 in the 119th over and moments later James Middlebrook put down a return catch off the advancing Stokes. He was on 46 at the time and ensured he made a maiden fifty before being caught trying to launch Middlebrook over the top. Coetzer remained in position until the end of the session but his eight-and-a-half hour vigil eventually ended in the softest way imaginable, lbw after missing a full-toss off Dawid Malan’s part-time legspin. His 172 consumed a mammoth 371 deliveries, 281 of which were dots. His dismissal was the first of four wickets in two-and-a-half overs as the Durham innings subsided in short order. Malan, remarkably, took all four wickets, with Borthwick, Mitchell Claydon and Callum Thorp all departing for ducks. Unfortunately for MCC, the flow of wickets was not stemmed by the change of innings and they were three down before the end of the fifth over.Thorp set the ball rolling, trapping Scott Newman leg before as he left a straight one, before Harmison took over. He quickly found some good pace and a testing line and was soon rewarded with the wicket of David Sales, pinned lbw for four. Next to go was James Taylor, the 2009 Young Cricketer of the Year, who fended a fiery delivery to Phil Mustard behind the stumps to depart for a three-ball duck. Captain Alex Gidman led a brief fightback, but fell for 29 as Mustard took a good catch to hand Stokes a maiden first-class wicket. James Foster and Malan steered the total into three figures before the former departed for 26, the victim of a superb return catch by Thorp.Thorp took a third wicket when Malan found Borthwick at point to leave his side 103 for six. Borthwick was then handed the ball and proceeded to rout the MCC’s tail, accounting for numbers eight to 11 with a 29-ball spell worth four for 27.The final score of 162 all out represented a lead of 297, but Will Smith opted to bat again. With both openers making first-innings centuries Smith went in with Borthwick at the top of the order, who promptly made a second duck of the day. Kirby was the bowler and he removed Dale Benkenstein lbw with the very nextdelivery to leave Durham nought for two – a score that improved by just seven before stumps.

Bizarre endings, and Gony's nightmare

Plays of the Day from the IPL fixture between Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore in Chennai

This was last year in South Africa; Manpreet Gony’s IPL 2010 has been a nightmare (file photo)•AFPIt’s not over yet
Welcome to the IPL, where things are so exciting no one’s even sure when thegame’s over. With seven deliveries remaining and Chennai Super Kings needingthree to win, R Vinay Kumar charged in to bowl. Suresh Raina slapped thewide full toss served up through covers for two, and umpire Rudi Koertzensignalled a no-ball – the extra run should have ended the match, but itdidn’t. Raina faced another delivery from Vinay, crashing it for four totake Chennai’s total five runs beyond Royal Challengers Bangalore’s and giving cricket statisticians something to quarrel about in their next meeting. The extra ball and runs were eventually discounted, and Chennai finished the game on 162.Such is life
With Chennai’s chase off to a cracking start, Harsha Bhogle, in the commentary box, was chatting to Virat Kohli, who was fielding at point, over the microphone. M Vijay slashed the next delivery towards Kohli, who was nutmegged when attempting aregulation stop. Bhogle asked after the misfield whether talking on-airhad distracted Kohli, to which his reply was: “Shit happens”.Gony baloney
It’s hard to think of a player having a worse tournament than ManpreetGony. He’s leaking runs at nearly two-a-ball, being butter-fingered in thefield, and the one chance he had to bat ended in an outrageous swipe thatcontributed to Chennai’s choke inthe match against Kings XI Punjab. It continued today, with his threeovers being smashed for 39 runs, and him dropping a straightforward catchoff Robin Uthappa at mid-off. Chennai had let off Uthappa twice in theteams’ previous encounter, but this time the batsman didn’t turn on thefireworks as he had at the Chinnaswamy.Vijay runs amuck
There’s already been a game in which Virender Sehwag was outscored by his openingpartner 29-0. It is not so far-fetched when you notice that the one makingthe runs is the explosive David Warner. It is a bit more freakish to seethe scorecard reading 38-0 (ML Hayden 0*, M Vijay 37*). Vijay isn’texactly renowned for his big hitting, but he showed off his ability tosmash the ball in the fourth over, lashing 24 leg-side runs off PraveenKumar. The over read: 0, 6, 2, 6, 4, 6.Keeping the crowd guessing
The last time Chennai played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, they made a mess of a game theyshould have won with ease. At one stage today, Chennai had needed 57 off54 with eight wickets remaining. But some tight Bangalore bowling and thewickets of MS Dhoni and Albie Morkel left Chennai needing 16 off the finaltwo overs, and the crowd remembering last week’s collapse. S Badrinath’scheeky four turned the crowd gung-ho again, before his dismissal switchedthem back to nervy. The very next delivery, though, Raina settled their worries by clubbing a no-ball for six to start the celebrations.Edgy Kallis
Jacques Kallis may have reclaimed the Orange cap with his fourthhalf-century of the tournament, but it wasn’t a classic Kallis inningstoday. He started off confidently, but couldn’t find the boundaries as theinnings progressed. In fact, his last three fours were all fortuitousoutside edges to third man. After failing to connect with five out of sixdeliveries in a row, he was dismissed attempting a sharp single off the seventh.

Pattinson takes six but NSW coast home

ScorecardPlaying just his third domestic 50-over match, James Pattinson claimed the first six NSW wickets to fall•Getty Images

Peter Siddle showed few ill effects in his comeback from a hamstring injury, but his efforts were overshadowed by a trio of teenagers who might one day challenge him for an international berth. The New South Wales opening duo of Mitchell Starc (3 for 36) and Josh Hazlewood (2 for 22) contained Victoria to a modest 188, and despite the record-breaking feats of the Bushrangers’ James Pattinson (6 for 48), the Blues rolled to a four-wicket Ford Ranger Cup victory.Australia’s selectors had cause to believe Christmas had arrived two days early at the Sydney Cricket Ground, with fast bowlers present and future revelling in the seam-friendly conditions. Siddle’s hopes of a Boxing Day recall received a boost after he completed 10 overs across three spells, hitting a top speed in excess of 140kph and at one stage striking Usman Khawaja a nasty blow to the ribs. But while Siddle’s eventual reward was economy (0 for 40), his teenage counterpart, Pattinson, proved decidedly more prolific. Playing just his third domestic 50-over match for Victoria, Pattinson claimed the first six New South Wales wickets to fall, including those of Ben Rohrer and Steven Smith in consecutive balls. His figures were the best ever by a Victorian in domestic limited-overs cricket, breaking Graeme Watson’s 40-year-old record, and the seventh best in Australian List A history.Using the hard, lively Sydney surface to full effect, the 19-year-old single-handedly drew Victoria back into a contest their batsman appeared to have conceded earlier in the day when rolled well inside their allotment of 50 overs. Pattinson accounted for the internationally capped trio of David Warner, Phil Jaques and Moises Henriques before the tenth over, and despite claiming three more wickets later in the innings, a lack of bowling support ensured the Blues victory with five overs to spare.”We spoke about getting the ball … nice and full early on,” Pattinson said. “That’s what Josh Hazlewood did for them. He bowled one of the best spells of bowling I’ve ever seen. My aim was just to get them driving.”With many more performances like this, Pattinson could well find himself occupying an obscure place in the history books. Only once before have brothers represented two different Test teams (Alec and George Hearne represented England, while Frank played for South Africa in the late 19th century), and following the England debut of his elder sibling, Darren, last year, the Pattinsons could double the membership of the exclusive club.Pattinson was not the only teenager to excel at the SCG on Wednesday. Hazlewood, his Australian under-19 teammate, was unplayable for much of his spell, swinging the ball away from the right-handers and seaming it back in. His figures may well have been bolstered had the Blues held their catches, but his efforts would have nonetheless impressed a national selection panel attempting to navigate their way through a fast bowling injury crisis.Hazlewood’s opening partner, Starc, proved similarly impressive. A towering left-armer at 1.96m, Starc troubled the Victorian batsmen from the outset to claim three wickets – including that of Andrew McDonald to a diving Rohrer catch that may well have been the best of the season. The efforts of NSW’s bowlers set-up a relatively comfortable run-chase, Pattinson notwithstanding, which was sealed with half-centuries to Daniel Smith (62 not out) and Khawaja (56).

ICC awards issue could motivate us – Smith

Graeme Smith, South Africa’s captain, has said it was disappointing no South African player made the shortlist for the ICC awards but felt their omission could act as a “motivating factor” during the Champions Trophy.”It is not individual recognition that drives us,” Smith said. “We are driven by what we want to achieve as a team and have had an amazing couple of years.”It is a little disappointing that not a single South African made the shortlist in any category because we are the number one team in both Test and ODI cricket. But that shows the strength of the team and perhaps the lack of ICC award nominations could be a motivating factor.”The list of nominations for the various ICC awards, which will be given out in Johannesburg on October 1, include six from India, four from Australia, three from England, two each from Sri Lanka, Pakistan, West Indies and one from New Zealand. It left South Africa as the only participant in the Champions Trophy without a single nomination for an ICC award.Their exclusion drew criticism from several high-profile figures in South Africa, including Gerald Majola, the national cricket board’s chief executive. Majola questioned the credibility of the awards and said it appeared to him that the only way to get on the shortlist was to play the Ashes.South Africa have been pooled in Group B in the Champions Trophy along with Sri Lanka, New Zealand and England. They begin their campaign in the tournament opener against Sri Lanka in Centurion on September 22. They have not played international cricket since the World Twenty20 in June and Smith said the squad was “fresh and ready to go”.

McCullum, Guptill should switch batting spots – Crowe

Martin Crowe has called for changes in New Zealand’s batting order in their first Champions Trophy fixture against hosts South Africa on Thursday. Crowe suggested Brendon McCullum bat down the order given his poor form, and Martin Guptill replace him as opener alongside Jesse Ryder.McCullum has had a disappointing 2009, averaging 24.46 in 16 ODIs. He averaged 8.50 in the recent Compaq Cup in Sri Lanka and managed 33 runs in the two warm-up games ahead of this tournament. Guptill, on the other hand, tops the run-scoring charts for New Zealand this year with 473 at 47.30, and notched up scores of 63 and 78 in the warm-ups.”I’d love to see Brendon McCullum drop down to number six or seven and Guptill come up and join Jesse Ryder,” Crowe told. “I think those guys are in reasonable form and we know that McCullum isn’t.”With McCullum coming down the order, if he’s got a target in his sight it will help his focus. He struggles to set up innings and he has done for a while now.”I’d also bring (Neil) Broom, who has shown some form in the warm-up games, up to four or five to join (Grant) Elliott, and (Ross) Taylor would go into number three, where I think he could do some real damage in the first few overs.”New Zealand are currently placed at No.7 in the ODI rankings, and have been below par this year, losing eight games and winning five. They are up against South Africa, who’ll be keen to bounce back after a comprehensive defeat to Sri Lanka in the tournament opener.Crowe felt New Zealand stood a chance of making it to the final four. “The New Zealand side on paper is a good side,” he said. “We win a game and all of a sudden you jump up a couple of places (in the rankings).”They are capable of doing that but just recently their form hasn’t been good. Let’s hope there is a turn around.”If you win one game you’re pretty well sure of making the semis. That’s what New Zealand have got to do.”They’ve got to try and take on South Africa, who I think fancied themselves going into the tournament but got a bit of a wake-up (call against Sri Lanka).”
