Zimbabwe have forfeited their Intercontinental Cup match against Scotland after the two sides couldn’t agree a venue following Scotland’s decision not tour the country and with the Zimbabwe board declining to use a neutral location. It means Scotland will now face Afghanistan in the final in Dubai during November after the ICC reluctantly accepted Zimbabwe Cricket’s (ZC) decision although warned against it happening again in the future.”We wanted this fixture to go ahead and we did everything possible to facilitate an agreement between the two sides. We were happy for the match to take place anywhere in the world but the sides could not agree,” said Dave Richardson, chairman of the event technical committee and ICC general manager of cricket. “It is disappointing for us and the ICC Intercontinental Cup that these two sides could not agree when or where to play their fixture and, for the integrity of the competition, these circumstances must not be allowed to happen again.””However, taking into account all of the circumstances that have been presented to the technical committee in this case, we are prepared to accept ZC’s unequivocal and unqualified statement of forfeiture and declare the match as being forfeited.”Zimbabwe took part in the tournament – the first-class event for Associate nations – as part of their route back to Test cricket although their decision to forfeit means they won’t be faced with the potential embarrassment of losing in the final despite still being funded as a Full Member.”We feel that the Intercontinental Cup is a significant competition in Scotland’s development and therefore important that it gets the full benefits associated with playing in it,” Ozias Bvute, the ZC managing director, said. “Moreover, given the limited playing opportunities available to them, it would be unnecessarily counterproductive to rob them of their right to participation or reduce their chances of reaching the final.”Zimbabwe has no dispute with either Cricket Scotland or the ICC. Instead, we seek only a solution that will ultimately allow for fair participation by all, as such, ZC has decided to forfeit the match in favour of Scotland. ZC wishes it to be noted that our development side has enjoyed its participation in this competition and we wish Cricket Scotland and their team the best as they now progress to the final.”Cricket Scotland chief executive Roddy Smith added: “Cricket Scotland notes the decision of the event technical committee. We are glad a conclusion has been reached on this issue and we are now very much looking forward to participating in the final. It will be a great opportunity for our young, talented side to experience the big-match environment of an ICC final.”

Journalist makes key Celtic transfer claim

Signing Cameron Carter-Vickers permanently will be a priority for Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou in the coming months, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Lowdown: Influential Hoops figure

The 24-year-old has been magnificent for the Hoops this season, having joined on loan from Tottenham during last year’s summer transfer window.

Carter-Vickers has been a rock at the heart of Celtic’s defence, starting 28 Scottish Premiership matches, averaging 4.2 clearances per game and even scoring four goals, unsurprisingly ranking as one of the squad’s five best players.

There is interest in the American from numerous clubs in England ahead of the summer, however, as Postecoglou tries to tie him down to a permanent move.

The Latest: Journalist positive about move

Speaking to Give Me Sport, O’Rourke claimed that Celtic will be working hard on signing Carter-Vickers, suggesting the manager is personally a big fan:

“I’m sure Celtic will be hoping to tie this deal up as soon as possible. They’ll want it done before Premier League clubs could maybe come in and offer more money for Carter-Vickers.

“I think it will be one of Postecoglou’s top priorities to get this deal done.”

The Verdict: Get it done

This is one of those transfers that feels like a complete no-brainer, with Carter-Vickers fitting in seamlessly at Parkhead and Spurs surely willing to let him leave – they have loaned him out to seven different clubs during his career.

The biggest threat is that interest from Premier League clubs turns the defender’s head, but he feels settled at Celtic and he is on the cusp of winning a double in his first year there, with reports from The Daily Record saying his camp are happy in Glasgow.

It would be a big blow to miss out on acquiring Carter-Vickers’ signature permanently now – he has been described as ‘immense’ by Chris Sutton – but all signs are pointing towards this one being done.

West Brom: Dorsett drops Maresca claim

West Bromwich Albion are interested in a move to appoint Enzo Maresca as Valerien Ismael’s successor at The Hawthorns.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by Rob Dorsett, with the Sky Sports journalist revealing in a recent post on Twitter that the former Parma Calcio 1913 head coach is a name that the West Brom board are considering following the Frenchman’s sacking on Wednesday afternoon.

In his tweet, Dorsett said: “I’m told Enzo Maresca a serious option for WBA but board, led by new CEO Ron Gourlay, will take time to assess. James Morrison took training today and will continue to. Albion were reluctant to lose Ismael (especially after paying £2m compensation) but results just too poor.”

Fans will be buzzing

Considering just how highly rated a coach Maresca is, the news that Albion are considering the 41-year-old as their next manager is sure to have left The Hawthorns faithful buzzing.

Having gained experience working as Vincenzo Montella’s assistant manager at Sevilla, Manuel Pellegrini’s number two at West Ham United and – after being personally scouted for the job by Pep Guardiola – spending the best part of a season as the Manchester City U23 head coach, the Italian was subsequently linked with a move to Celtic last summer – although an offer from the Scottish club is not believed to have materialised.

However, with the manager very much looking to be a deep-thinker regarding tactics and the way football should be played, it would appear as if, should the Baggies go on to appoint Maresca, the football on show would be hugely different to that on display under the leadership of Ismael.

Indeed, speaking about his approach to the game, the 41-year-old said: “My thesis at Coverciano is called ‘Football and Chess’. There are a lot of similarities. The most important is positional play and strategy. For a coach, it’s important to have the mentality of a chess player: develop a plan, study counter moves, choose the arrangement of the pieces.”

As such, while Maresca may be lacking in experience in professional management, should West Brom take a chance on the young coach, it could well be rewarded with an incredibly exciting and successful brand of football – something that the Albion fans would undoubtedly love to see.

Newcastle transfer news on Carlos

Diego Carlos could reportedly now be tempted with a move to Newcastle United in the summer.

The Lowdown: January not to be

It was no secret that the St. James’ Park faithful were strongly pushing to sign Carlos throughout most of the January transfer window only for a deal to fall through, with the Magpies opting to sign Dan Burn from Brighton and Hove Albion instead.

This came after the Brazilian himself handed in a transfer request at Sevilla in order to try and force through a move to the North East, and so a move to Tyneside in the future should not be ruled out, so long as they can avoid relegation from the Premier League of course.

The Latest: Summer move?

As per La Razon, Carlos could now be tempted again by a move to the Magpies in the summer.

The news outlet cites that the Toon made an offer worth up to €55m (£46.3m) last month to Sevilla for their central defender, which was turned down, but does not specify how much it would take to get him once the summer transfer window opens.

The Verdict: Get it done

Interestingly, Sevilla considered Carlos ‘untouchable’ in January, despite bids coming in for him and his transfer request, but now it looks like he could try and force through a move in the summer instead.

Whatever price the La Liga club set, Eddie Howe’s simply have to pay it, as he would lift the quality of their backline beyond measure.

The six-foot-one colossus has been dubbed as a ‘real leader at the back’ (The Daily Express) by European football expert Andy Brassell, and is appropriately nicknamed ‘The Beast‘, a no-nonsense defender that would certainly help NUFC concede fewer goals next season, having helped Sevilla keep the best defensive record in La Liga so far.

Nonetheless, after the signing of another Brazilian in Bruno Guimaraes, his arrival would further show a statement of intent from the new owners.

Karthik helps Delhi crush Rajasthan

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
How they were outDinesh Karthik was key to Delhi’s recovery and their thumping win•Indian Premier League

Dinesh Karthik hit a delightful half-century on a slow pitch to charge Delhi Daredevils to a facile win against Rajasthan Royals at the Feroz Shah Kotla. Delhi were wobbling on 67 for 4 but Karthik added 79 with Gautam Gambhir to stabilise the innings before he exploded in style to provide the perfect finish. The target proved too stiff for Rajasthan, who never got going in the chase, and Delhi moved to second position in the points table. On a pitch that was never going to get easier to bat on, it needed a special effort from Rajasthan, and Yusuf Pathan in particular, to overhaul this target. The entire chase revolved around Pathan. Rajasthan kept him back for the middle overs, for the battle against spin, but he was forced to come in early after Farveez Maharoof toppled the top order with his slow legcutters.Yusuf hit a couple of sixes but when he lofted a slow, loopy legbreak from Amit Mishra to long-on, the chase derailed entirely. The packed house had more moments to cherish as David Warner took four catches and affected a run out to play a hand in five dismissals.Rajasthan’s troubles in the chase highlighted the value of Karthik’s innings. He looked in touch right from the start and never allowed a run-scoring opportunity to go waste. What stood out was how well he paced his innings, and the thought he put into it. He played Shane Warne with caution, realising he could always take chances against the other bowlers. He blasted Tait to the straight boundary and unfurled a pick-up shot over square leg against Trivedi, but it was in the 17th over that he really shifted gears. He swung Sumit Narwal for a straight six on bent knee and followed up with a six over long-on next ball.Karthik reserved his best for Tait, hitting a hat-trick of fours in the 18th over – a drilled straight boundary, a whipped on-drive and a deliciously-timed cover drive. And he wasn’t done yet. In the final over, he pulled Tait for a six before holing out to long-on off the last delivery. By then, Karthik had done his job.Delhi seemed to have entered the game with a plan. Since the dry pitch was getting slower, they wanted to cash in against the new ball. They went hard at it – with Virender Sehwag, David Warner and even Paul Collingwood, going for their shots. Sehwag struck the first few blows, swinging Yusuf Pathan for a six over wide long on and carving Adam Voges repeatedly over the off-side field.Warne tried to take the pace off by using two spinners in the Powerplay but it was his medium-pacer Narwal who struck with the new ball, removing the explosive duo of Sehwag and Warner. Narwal saw Warner being reprieved by Trivedi at mid-on but struck almost immediately with a yorker. He then bowled a short delivery outside off to Sehwag, who edged the pull shot to the deep square-leg fielder.Collingwood started with a flamboyant short-arm pulled six against Tait before he cut the bowler to the point boundary. However, he was run out by Voges, who dived full stretch to his left at point to intercept a square drive from Gambhir, and threw quickly to catch Collingwood short of the crease. Delhi went from 50 for 3 to 67 for 4 when Warne lured Kedar Jadhav into holing out to long-on in the ninth over.It could have gone either way at this point but Gambhir found support from Karthik and they slowly, but assuredly, pushed Delhi towards a competitive total. The challenges were plenty: the ball started to stop a bit, Warne bowled a testing spell, Trivedi slipped in his cutters and Tait tried to beat them with pace in the air.It was a little risk-free leg glance that settled Gambhir, who had started shakily, and got him going. Thereafter he used his feet to tackle the threat of Warne and rotated the strike with Karthik, who provided the much-needed momentum with an innings of character.

Villa’s predicted starting XI vs Everton

Following on from their 2-2 draw against Manchester United in their previous Premier League outing that saw Aston Villa crawl back from being 2-0 down to secure a point, Steven Gerrard takes his side to Goodison Park this afternoon to take on Everton in their latest league clash.

Having sacked Rafa Benitez after their 2-1 defeat against Norwich City last weekend, Duncan Ferguson will be leading Everton in his first game as caretaker manager to try and get their season back on track.

In terms of Villa and which players Gerrard could select to be in his starting XI, with Bertrand Traore and Trezeguet still away on international duty and Marvelous Nakamba and Leon Bailey still out through injury, Villa are also sweating on the fitness of defender Ezri Konsa after he picked up a hip issue in the draw against the Red Devils last weekend.

With that in mind, here’s how we fee Villa will line up today.

In goal, having played in all but one of Villa’s Premier League games so far this season and recently putting pen to paper on a new deal with the Midlands club, it’d be hard not to see Emi Martinez start this afternoon.

For the full-back positions, we think Gerrard will stick with the same pair that started against United with Matty Cash on the right and January signing Lucas Digne on the left once again.

In the centre-back roles, Gerrard may not feel it’s worth the risk putting Konsa back in so we think he’ll stick with Tyrone Mings and put Kortney Hause in, who, like Martinez, has recently signed a new deal at the club.

In midfield, with John McGinn back after serving a one-match ban in the game against United, we think Gerrard will have no issue in putting him back straight back in the side with Morgan Sanson dropping out.

Next to McGinn we can see Douglas Luiz and Jacob Ramsey playing in midfield to try and provide some stability and control against the Toffees.

For the attack, we think Gerrard will give Philippe Coutinho his first start in a Villa shirt on the left-wing after making a big impact off the bench on his debut against United by scoring their crucial equalising goal.

Then finally we predict that Gerrard will make a big decision and drop Danny Ings, who is currently earning a weekly wage of £100k-per-week according to Salary Sport, from the side with Ollie Watkins playing through the middle with Emi Buendia on the right.

Lage reveals Adama latest

Wolves manager Bruno Lage has revealed the latest information regarding the future of winger Adama Traore, who has been subject to interest from other Premier League clubs.

What’s the latest?

According to Lage, Wolves are yet to receive a bid for the Spaniard. Speaking to the media, the 45-year-old said: “No [bids]. For now I know nothing.

“About Adama, the only thing I can say, it’s the same Adama since the first day. Every time training well, being the good professional he is. He is here with us, wants to play for us and always works hard.

“If you look at the 19 or 20 games we have had, he has started at least half the games,” Lage explained. “When he hasn’t been in the first XI, he jumped from the bench to help the team.

“In my mind, yes, nothing changes. But this is football. The club has talked with Adama before, he has one year left on his contract, and I need to understand that.

“It’s not just about Adama, if it’s good for the club and the player, we need to find a solution.”

According to Birmingham Live, Premier League duo Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea are interested as are Spanish giants Barcelona; it is Spurs who are currently leading the race.

Now in the final 18 months of his contract at Molineux, the 25-year-old will need to make a decision on his future soon.

Wolves fans will be relieved

Although the winger has been limited to ten Premier League starts this campaign, Traore is still an important contributor for Wolves and the fact they’ve received no bids for his services will leave the Molineux faithful relieved.

The 25-year-old netted his first goal of the campaign on Saturday in the 3-1 win over Southampton which will now hopefully act as a catalyst for more goal contributions this side of the season.

A lack of goal involvement has been the Spaniard’s major weakness during his time in the West Midlands, managing just 11 goals and 18 assists in 153 appearances for the Old Gold.

However, his lightning pace and colossal strength make the winger a nightmare to defend against, particularly when he’s in form, therefore making him the ideal weapon for Wolves to unleash from their arsenal in the latter stages of a game, particularly if they’re in need of a goal.

To lose a player mid-season is never ideal, especially if a replacement can’t be signed. Should Traore fail to sign a contract extension by the summer, then Wolves fans may be more open to the idea of the winger leaving.

However, to lose him at this stage of the campaign, with the Midlands side chasing European qualification, Lage and co. will be desperate to hold onto Traore this window.

No instant major impact, says Simons

India’s new bowling consultant has said the short nature of his six-week stint may not result in a major impact, but he will try to help the Indian bowlers as much as he can

Sriram Veera in Chittagong19-Jan-2010India’s bowling consultant Eric Simons has said the short nature of his six-week stint may not have an immediate major impact but he will try to help the Indian bowlers as much as he can. He also said the ongoing Test match against Bangladesh in Chittagong would help him assess how the Indian bowlers operate before he starts weighing in with his opinions.”It would be arrogant for me to come in, for a South African, and tell the Indian bowlers how to bowl,” Simons said in Chittagong, on the sidelines of the first Test. “It’s about finding a joint solution. I have two series, just six weeks. It takes time to make a major impact. But when I walk away and the bowler says I have helped him in some small way to become better, helped him with ideas, I will be happy.”Speaking about his initial assessment of the bowlers he said, “I see the Indian bowlers as a technically talented unit. Maybe the problems, if any, are from a lack of confidence from playing lots of ODIs.”I have just come in now and am not in the position, at this stage, to talk about India’s bench strength and what talented bowlers are out there in the circuit. I remember I saw [Abhimanyu] Mithun, from Karnataka, bowl for Royal Challengers Bangalore. He seemed a very good prospect. I am sure there are other talents out there. I know about Mithun because I happened to be involved with the Royal Challengers in IPL.”Simons was wary of getting into details, whether about India’s recent struggle during death bowling in ODIs or on any specific bowler, but he responded to a direct question about Ishant Sharma’s performance. “One of the things that happen is that we sometimes ask bowlers to do something that he is not comfortable with,” Simons said. “For example, it’s not easy for a bowler who bowls big inswingers to bowl the one that goes other way. You have to consider what he is naturally good at and gradually work at the other stuff.”As for Ishant, I have had a chat and I know he wants to be more successful. I thought he bowled brilliant stuff this morning though he ended up with just one wicket.”He responded warily on Ian Chappell’s comments that India’s position as the No. 1 Test team would be compromised by their bowling. Simon said everyone was entitled to their views but added that, “India have got to No. 1 in the world, why can’t they stay there?”He said he would sit down with the bowlers and fix the “controllables and non-negotiables.” “Fitness and tactic is controllable; you can bowl a yorker, that’s in your hand, what you can’t control is what the batsman does with it. It’s all about the process. You might bowl six yorkers and it might be edged for fours but it’s the process that is important.”Simons also shared his views on India’s bowling performance in the ongoing Test. “At times I have felt they could have bowled better,” he said. “They have pulled it back really well.”He also talked about his relationship with India coach Gary Kirsten and how it would help him. “It will be wrong for the coach to come to South Africa and tell them what to do,” Simons said. “And vice-versa. That’s where Gary Kirsten is so good. He is not arrogant and wants to help a cricket team get better. Knowing him is a vital for me, especially considering the short stint of my job. I have to sit with the management to understand the vision forward. I am sure they are looking at some one for the long term. Let’s see how it works out.”
